The West Bengal Higher Education department has decided to establish a centralized online admission portal for undergraduate courses in state-run and aided colleges and universities. The move aims to simplify the admission process for UG courses in West Bengal, and a 10-member committee will oversee the implementation of the portal.

Details of the Admission Portal

As per the circular issued by the department, the centralized web-based online admission portal developed by Webel Technology Ltd will be utilized for UG general degree courses in government, government-aided colleges, unitary universities, and state-aided affiliating universities in West Bengal. Students can apply to any state-run or aided college/university offering UG courses via a single portal, thereby eliminating the need to log into the admission portal of a specific institution. However, autonomous colleges, minority educational institution colleges, training colleges, law colleges, and universities offering courses such as fine arts, crafts, dance, music, engineering, pharmacy, nursing, medical colleges, and self-financing private colleges are not included in this centralized process.

Implementation and Previous Attempts

The new system will be implemented in the upcoming academic session after the announcement of Class XII board exam results, which is expected by the end of May. It is noteworthy that the state government had previously attempted to introduce a centralized online portal for college and university admissions last year, but it was unsuccessful due to the lack of technological support available to the institutes at that time. The current move to set up a centralized online admission portal aims to simplify the admission process for UG courses in West Bengal and increase efficiency.
